Most Shopify products are not a single inventory item. Apparel has sizes and colors. Beauty products have bundles and scents. Electronics may have storage, finish, or accessory variants. A product-level restock signup is often too broad.
The risk of product-level alerts
If a shopper wants size M in black and only size XL in white comes back, a generic product alert creates disappointment. It can also inflate demand reporting because the merchant cannot tell which exact variant shoppers wanted.
What variant-level tracking gives merchants
- Accurate demand by size, color, or option combination.
- Cleaner restock prioritization.
- Fewer irrelevant emails.
- Better conversion reporting after restock.
Inventory transitions matter too
A good restock system should send when inventory moves from unavailable to available, then suppress repeat alerts until the variant becomes unavailable again. That prevents duplicate campaigns after minor inventory edits.
Bodanu Back in Stock uses variant-specific subscriptions and inventory transition logic to keep alerts aligned with the shopper's selected variant.
